Sohanak pool
Project type
Pool
Date
2015
Location
Tehran, Iran
Sohanak Swimming Pool and its adjoining building are located in a private garden in a region in the northeast of Tehran, surrounded by pine trees and plants. The project sits on a flat area atop a small hill and offers a view of the city and the surrounding gardens.
The pool was originally intended to be inside the existing villa building, which was built on the northwest side. However, there was an old, unused irrigation pool on the other side of the garden that was left unused due to changes in the irrigation system. To make the best use of the garden and its beautiful landscape, it was decided to give a new identity to this part of the site by developing the swimming pool and an adjacent building, including a sauna, hot tub, bathroom, dressing room, and a large platform for sun loungers and watching the sunset.
Due to the location of the pool on the main existing axis, the extension building was designed as a Koushk (a summer kiosk open from four sides). One characteristic of the Koushk is its hollow interior space and the reflection of the building's image on the water.
Another important aspect is the connection between architecture and nature. To achieve this, the entire structure and part of the surrounding landscape are framed by a continuous surface, which connects to the edge of the pool on one side and the surrounding green space on the other. Additionally, part of the pool extends into the empty space of the building. The gap created by this interface is filled with water, creating a unique illusion. This effect is intensified by a large deck overlooking the pool. In other words, nature passes through the building, making it a part of itself, and the building's reflection on the water emphasizes this phenomenon.
